I was visiting a friend the other day, who through no fault of his own happens to reside in one of our more upscale and exclusive neighbourhoods when I had need to make use the washroom facilities. As I was sitting there I instinctively looked around for something to read (as one does) and my eyes alighted on a copy of that timeless publication “The Watchtower”. You know, the one that Jehovah’s Witnesses leave lying around where they hope people might read it. I was a little taken aback to find it there as I know my friend to be a diehard athiest with moderately militant tendencies. Making a mental note to question him on this strange anomaly, I settled in for a humorous read on the can. It contained all kinds of simpleminded nonsense examples of which, the curious can find on The Watchtower website.

The issue here is not the content of this magazine, that would be a rather long and frankly tedious rebuttal. The issue is something which came out of our conversation about how this magazine ended up in his washroom. It appears that my friend has been recieving repeated Sunday morning visits from JOHO’s as they are called around here. I was curious that they were so active in this upscale neighbourhood but are never to be seen in the less salubrious area where I myself reside, but I’ll leave you to figure that little conundrum out for yourselves.

I asked him why he didn’t just tell them to go away and never come back but he stated that he was eliciting a perverse pleasure out of their attempts to save his soul. He said he enjoyed rebutting their arguements and that every week they would send him freshblood in the shape of someone new who was going to try to “reach” him. I told him I thought he was sick and should leave the poor souls alone.

It was then that he mentioned that one of the JOHO leaders had stated that when the rapture came, along with all the believers who would be raised up to heaven, would also be all the animals. Now the obvious question to ask when faced with this statement is “what about the predators?”. What kind of heaven would it be with every type of predator that ever lived running around? It doesn’t sound like heaven in fact it sounds like an extremely dangerous place indeed! It was at this point that he was told “Oh no, all the animals will be restored to their original state as they were right after God created them and they would all be vegetarians. Yes folks, we are talking about vegetarian lions here!

Clearly this is a ridiculous notion, but it also raised a question for me. What about the birds? You see we now have indisputable proof that birds decended from dinosaurs.

So, does this mean that if the JOHO’s are to be believed all birds will be excluded from heaven and replaced by their dinosaur ancestors? If this is true heaven appears to be getting more hellish by the day!

Some good advice would be to never mix sport with religion. In particular mixing football and religion. In fact some might say that mixing anything with religion is like putting salt in your coffee or soap on your dinner, the results are always distasteful.

The lastest piece of nonsense that has come to my attention is this business of the German football team F.C. Schalke whose fans have been singing a club song celebrating their blue and white colours at every game since 1927. Apparently someone just noticed that one of the verses makes reference to “he who shall not be named”. You know who I’m talking about.

The verse in question goes thus, “Mohammed was a prophet / who understood nothing about football / but from all the blaze of colour / he picked the blue and white.” The song is an adaptation of an 18th century German hunting tune (whatever that is) and the original goes something like this, “Mohammed is my patron! He knew real beauty. He, for whom only green was holy from all the colours.” Neither version appears to have any negative slant toward Mohammed or Islam but this hasn’t stopped the General Secretary of the Islamic Council in Germany making the following statement.

“It is not right that the prophet is mentioned in a club anthem. I would wish that out of respect for the Muslims in this country the Mohammed-stanza is not sung,” The Turkish press have gone a little further variously describing the chant as an insult to the “prophet” and proof of western Islamophobia.

In the broad spectrum of what might constitute offensiveness this song barely moves the needle. There are indeed some truly offensive football chants that are sung with gusto and abandon on a weekly basis in football grounds around the world. Just ask Sol Campbell affectionately known as “Judas” by the fans of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. who engendered a particularly personal response from the fans for his infamous disloyalty to the club. Also you could ask the fans of Tottenham Hotspur themselves, a team with traditionally jewish support who face barrages of hissing from thousands of opposition fans at every game (meant to represent the sound of gas entering a gas chamber). Many other sets of fans bait each other mercilessly and consistently and little or nothing is usually done about it.

I personally find it offensive to my beliefs that every time someone thinks they have been offended these days they demand some kind of pound of flesh or a righting of the percieved wrong. To paraphrase something that many people have said before me “You have the right to believe whatever you like, but you do not have the right not to be offended by others”

The sad thing about all this fundamentalist preciousness is that the Quran makes no mention of any of these things. There is no ban on the use of Mohammed’s name, these things all come from the Hadith an oral history of Mohammed’s alleged beliefs developed by muslims in the centuries following Mohammed’s death. You now, kind of made up.

http://facesofmohammed.freehostia.com/

I suspect the real issue for not just Muslims but all people of faith is not blasphemy but ridicule. Religious belief by its very nature is wide open to ridicule. The belief in fantastic supernatural stories from an ancient time, faith in invisible gods, the living of ones life by the dictates of ancient desert dogma, these are all very easy to mock and religion cannot stand to be made a mockery of. So far better to try to ban any adverse criticism and make it illegal and if that doesn’t work maybe threats and intimidation will.

In western society the influence of religion on public life has been severely limited since the time of The Enlightenment when wise men realized that allowing religious ideas of one kind or another to dominate society was extremely unhealthy and downright dangerous. The clergy were effectively neutered. The problem for Islam is that it demands far more respect than it is due and gets far too much respect for it’s demands.

This brings me to the buzzword of the moment “Islamophobia”. Anyone who challenges Islam these days is now labelled Islamophobic. So what exactly is a phobia? The clinical definition is “an irrational, intense, persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, or people.” Most people’s issues with Islam are far from irrational infact they are profoundly rational. So to label critics or even football chants as Islamophobic is illogical indeed. The hysteria that is generated by any percieved slight to their beliefs however betrays the true phobics

I think a good yardstick might be that if your faith cannot bear criticism or ridicule with out you throwing all your toys out of the pram, it may be time to reassess your faith.

The bedrock of modern Canada was laid down by farmers, those early settlers who accepted that parcel of land and the challenge to clear it of forest or give it up. They worked hard and cultivated a nation from the soil. Times have changed.

An interesting story came up in the local press today concerning a greenhouse operation who allegedly laid off 26-27 local workers and immediately replaced them with migrant labour from Guatemala.

http://stcatharinesstandard.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1684459

At first glance, it appears that the employer has manipulated employment legislation and the Federal Governments Migrant Worker Program to “clean house” and reduce costs. Certainly if this is what has happened the employer deserves to be held to account for their actions and my first “gut” reaction was more or less along those lines.

Later in the day I had a chance to think it through. Having in the past worked in local vineyards, peach orchards and greenhouses and maintaining links with them, I have one or two insights that may or may not be relevant.

During my time working in the agriculture industry in Niagara I quickly learned a few “facts of life”. One glaringly obvious fact was that there were very few locals working there if any. Hence the need for the Migrant Workers Program. Of those who did brave the elements only the highly motivated and productive lasted any length of time. I quickly learned to keep up with the fastest workers and make sure I was “useful” to my employers or I knew I wouldn’t be coming back. Modern Agriculture has no time or margins for the unproductive.

Another fact I quickly learned was that all workers are not equal. This is in reference to the Employment Standard Act which in key areas does not apply to agricultural workers. For example, yesterday while the rest of the province was enjoying the Civic Holiday, agricultural workers all over Ontario were working as usual. A request had been put in to mother nature asking that she please halt all growth of weeds, mould, bacteria and pests for the day but unfortunately no response had been forthcoming.

The point is that agriculture is an intrinsically seasonal activity, hence the need for seasonal workers and casual labour. There are very few full-time permanent positions in the industry. Historically this combined with low wages has led to locals opting for better paid or less taxing work that has usually been readily available up until fairly recently.

The thing that had really got me thinking was a story I had recently been told by a friend who just happens to be a local vineyard manager. He told me that he already has his crew of 10 highly trained Mexican vineyard workers that he has built up over many years who are highly skilled and productive. At busy times large amounts of extra labour may be required, this means calling on farm labour pools and other sources for temporary workers. Having found local casual labour pools to usually send untrained workers who were often incapable of performing the work to the standard required productively or simply didn’t seem to care and where just there to “book hours” he decided that he was not willing to jeopardize a multi-million dollar operation with these hands.

So he looked further. He found a local private labour supplier whose gang of 50-60 Polish and Ukrainian immigrants were experienced vineyard workers. A definite improvement you would think and the workers certainly moved faster if still nowhere near as quickly and efficiently as the Mexicans. It quickly became clear however that although they were quicker, these workers were not performing the tasks as instructed. The manager spoke to the gang’s supervisor and explained that this was an experimental vineyard and that all decisions were being taken with close attention to scientific study and that new techniques were being used. The supervisor seemed uninterested and told the manager “If you don’t like it, do what you want!” knowing that the manager needed the workers and had no choice but to let them finish the work. The workers continued to perform the tasks as they always had apparently unwilling to change.

Exasperated and now quite probably in a losing battle with nature, the manager did not call the gang back the next time they were needed. Instead he contacted another private labour provider, this time a group of Vietnamese workers. He explained to their supervisor the problems he’d had with other temporary workers. The supervisor translated all the instructions to the group and the work was done efficiently and accurately. Despite paying $2 per hour more to each worker, the work was done in half the time and exactly to instructions saving the vineyard many thousands of dollars over the season and contributing to a healthy, high quality crop.

I don’t know what really happened in that greenhouse, but I did notice that many of the workers fired were older local workers who are not traditionally the kind of workers you would normally expect to see in those jobs. Over the last year or so the recession has forced many locals to take up agricultural jobs they would in better times have avoided. As I mentioned earlier modern agriculture needs tough, healthy, hardy, adaptable and motivated labour.

Having said that, I do in fact have personal knowledge of many local workers who cannot get hired at the greenhouse in question and if the readers comments to the story linked above are anything to go by then something really is seriously amiss down there.

As our economies shift in response to globalism and our communities need to find new ways to survive in the volatile, uncertain economies we find ourselves, agriculture may yet again become a more realistic option for many who previously would have been employed in manufacturing or other industries that are fast disappearing. Times may indeed have changed but one things for sure, they will continue to do so.

So, welcome back to the farm, it’s a different world.

The recent civil ruling by Ontario Superior Court that 5 NRP officers, Michael Woodfine, Dino Cirillo, Todd Priddle, James Tallevi and Darren Forbes commited crimes of negligence, false arrest, assault, malicious prosecution and breach of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, is deeply disturbing.

http://www.wellandtribune.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1640440

The response of the NRP Chief Wendy Southall is staggering. She states through an NRP Media release that “Disciplinary charges would be problematic now, because of time limitations in the Police Services Act as well as “notions of fairness and natural justice.”

Natural Justice? Quite clearly 5 NRP officers have broken laws and indulged in gratuitous brutality against a member of the public, this has now been confirmed by a Superior Court judge. Would not Natural Justice in this case have been that the Crown lay Criminal Charges against these thugs? With this statement Wendy Southall is re-enforcing the notion that police officers are above the law. The actions and in-actions in this matter of the Crown, NRP and Wendy Southall are shameful. They have lost all credibility.
